FINDING NEW VOICES
DEFINING NEW GENRES
There’s something so utterly compelling and addictive about books, about storytelling, about characters, knowledge, opinions, thoughts. That’s why Urbane Publications started. To feed a wonderful addiction for amazing books and share it with you. But at a time when anyone with a story to tell or knowledge to impart can take their words and self-publish, some of them incredibly successfully (and all power to them!!), why on earth would I launch a new publishing house? Because publishers still have much to offer both wordsmiths and word devourers, helping shape new authors, new genres, new content and ultimately create new addicts ☺
October 1st saw the launch of our inaugural title, Simon Pont’s Remember to Breathe. A wonderful novel (but then I would say that wouldn’t I?) it offers readers of contemporary fiction a little romance, a lot of humour (dare I say it, even some wit), and plenty of emotion to sink your teeth into. How would I position the book? It channels a nip of Nicholls, a smidge of Amis, even a soupcon of Self. It’s fun, real, and yes, urbane.
So I want you to come and meet Samuel Grant, the book’s quintessential anti-hero, as he copes in his own very unique way with the arrival of the Millennium. I think we can all recognise a little of ourselves in Samuel, even if it’s just at the bottom of a tequila glass, and to prove it why not have a go at our questionnaire and see just how closely you match our eponymous hero. You can even log your results to try and win a free copy of the book – I know, generosity abounds here at Urbane Publications. Talking of generosity, you may have noticed there is a LoveFilm channel to celebrate the book and the year it’s set, 1999 – go and take a peek and you could grab yourself a £15 Amazon voucher www.lovefilm.com/samuelgrant
Watch this space as we’ll also be organising more content to support Remember to Breathe. You can point your browsers at www.areyouasamuelgrant.com to keep up to date with everything we’re doing to support the book and make the novl a more interactive entertainment experience. And if you want to know more about the author you can always head over to simonpont.com and say hi.
For now, have a look at the site, get stuck into the questionnaire, and feel free to drop me an email or a tweet if the mood takes you. I’ll be blogging at least once a month giving my thoughts on new books, the industry, self-publishing and whatever else takes my fancy so stay tuned and stay in touch. It will be wonderful to welcome you to the Urbane community.
Aren’t words just extraordinary?
