About Thras Moraitis
Thras Moraitis is an executive at Feed Algae, a company producing algae as a protein alternative for fish feed and other applications. Thras was a cofounder and partner at X2 Resources – a $4bn natural resource-focused private investment vehicle – responsible for strategic development, investor management, communications and post-acquisition integration. Prior to this, Thras was Group Head of Strategy and Corporate Affairs and a member of the Executive Committee at Xstrata plc until the company was sold to Glencore in 2013. Thras joined Xstrata in October 2002 and was responsible for strategic development, post-acquisition integration, leadership development, external affairs and investor relations as well as Xstrata’s technology business.
Over the past three decades, Thras has been involved in tens of transactions totalling over $50bn – as a principal investor, an advisor to major multinationals and as a public company C-suite executive. As the member of Xstrata Plc’s (FTSE top 20 company) executive board responsible for post-acquisition integration for over a decade, Thras has overseen numerous multi-billion dollar integrations, including the $3bn acquisition of MIM in 2003, the $20bn acquisition of Falconbridge in 2007 and the planning of the combination of Glencore and Xstrata into a highly complex $80bn global organisation in 2013.
Over his career, Thras has travelled to some sixty countries, lived in four and worked in over thirty. He is of Greek descent and was born and raised in South Africa.
Thras has authored various articles on strategy, leadership development and M&A, and co-authoring a book “Playing at Acquisitions, Smit and Moraitis, Princeton University Press, 2015” and related articles published in Long Range Planning and California Management Review.
