Urbane Publications to close at the end of April 2021
The pandemic, coupled with Brexit, has been a challenging time for us all, especially independent businesses like ours. Many industries have suffered and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future, with thousands of companies, shops, restaurants, bars, and bookshops closing for good. This continued closure of bookshops and all events has placed ever more emphasis on online sales. Bertrams – our leading wholesale partner – collapsed owing money to many publishers and removing one of our key routes to market and sales; book fairs and festivals have been cancelled, massively reducing rights sales and author promotional opportunities; and the postponement and uncertainty around publication dates have severely limited the pre-orders and publicity we could drive on each new title. This, exacerbated by what was becoming an increasingly challenging market for Urbane and increased printing and postal costs due to Brexit, has meant the board had to make some very tough decisions.
It is therefore with great regret that we must inform you that Urbane Publications will close at the end of April 2021. This is not a decision taken lightly. Over the last 6 years Urbane has published over 300 books, and proudly provided a platform for many first-time authors alongside seasoned authors, investing significantly in titles that dare to be different, from innovative thrillers to compelling biographies, and original literary fiction to groundbreaking business books. We’ve enjoyed wonderful support from a strong community of readers, developed very strong partnerships with our authors and much of the wider publishing industry, and built lasting friendships with some of you. Sadly however, the additional investment, resources and hours in the day required to maintain Urbane’s commercial success are simply unworkable, so we will close on a ‘high’ and pursue other ambitions.
It only remains for the team behind Urbane to say thank you to each and every one of you for your engagement, enthusiasm and support – a publisher is nothing without its authors, readers, designers, sales team, printers, distributors, other cogs in the wheel, and you have made this a journey to remember.
